#FreedomToTeach

A National Campaign to End Bans on Diverse Books and Teaching Resources in Canada

Launched on Change.org

We’re celebrating The 41st Freedom to Read Week with a Canadian call to action.

In Canada, we hear so much about book bans in the US — but did you know that the very same repressive practices happen right here in Canada too? Today, in schools across the country, educators and librarians fear retaliation for teaching or recommending books and resources that represent diverse lived experiences.

Let Canadian Teachers Teach!

The Freedom to Teach campaign highlights the ways historically underrepresented communities continue to be erased in Canadian classrooms.

With your support, we hope to raise awareness of the unique and underreported barriers that Canadian teachers, librarians and students face in accessing diverse books, history, and resources  — including disability, Black, Indigenous and Asian history, feminism, SOGI/E (Sexual Orientation Gender Identity / Expression) and more.

What people are saying:

Sharing your story is a powerful way to achieve access protections for teachers, librarians and students in schools across the country, one community at a time.

  • My mom is a librarian, and I here about all the books she is forced to take out of her library...The principal literally banned a book that teaches kids about their own biology.

  • Educators need to be allowed to educate. We have nothing without a strong diverse education system.

    R.R. | Saskatoon, Canada

  • I thought these things only happen in the Albertan territories and deep south????

    J.R. | Kelowna, Canada

  • As a former student of the catholic school system, I witnessed attempts at book bans and censorship firsthand.

    C.B. | Vancouver, Canada

  • Children should not be told that their various aspects of themselves and their families are "bannable".

    C.V. | Calgary, Canada

  • These books open up discussion and allows our children to think on their own, to problem solve, to be better than those of our past.

    K.S. | Woodstock, Canada

  • As a teacher, I strongly believe that young people need to encounter and think about a variety of issues as part of their development of empathy and critical thinking.

    K.M. | NE Margaree, Canada

  • Thank you to...I Dream Library for your diligence, time and work in making sure that we and our children have the freedom to read...
