Together We Thrive
The Booklist for BC’s first Intersectional Anti-oppression Curriculum
An Intersectional Anti-oppression Booklist
Kindergarten - Grade 4 +
Together We Thrive from the Hope Inclusion Project is the first B.C. designed curriculum that offers intersectional social justice education in the early years. Literacy is the foundation of this curriculum. Eight timeless picture books anchor ready-to-teach lesson plans that address the intersectional nature of systemic oppression. Through storytelling, place based learning, and design thinking, teachers and students will grow together in their critical awareness and practice of equity.
FOR EDUCATORS this curriculum offers accessible entry points to teaching, learning, and practicing intersectional anti-oppression in the early years.
FOR STUDENTS this curriculum encourages and validates varied learning styles, and multicultural perspectives.
FOR COMMUNITIES this curriculum promises a multi-generational impact, through entraining a worldview that integrates the collective wisdom of historically and presently marginalized people, values, and ways of living. This includes people of all ages who are Black Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Islanders, 2SLGBTQIA+, neurodiverse and disabled.
A Coalition for Intersectional 2SQTI/BIPOC Representation in Education
Together We Thrive is a multi-year project, still ongoing, and the result of engaging a diverse group of collaborators and community stakeholders (Hope Inclusion Project, Free Rein Associates Training, I Dream Library, Fraser Health, Vancouver based BIPoC skateboard organizations, faith leaders, teachers, students, District 78 Indigenous Education Committee, District 78 Board of Trustees, civic leaders, and institutional allies). Together, we created BC's first free intersectional anti-oppression curriculum for Kindergarten - Grade 12.
Phase 1, Together We Thrive (K-Gr. 4) written by I Dream Library founder Aisha Kiani, in partnership with Hope inclusion Project and School District 78. The curriculum launched in April 2024, and is a testament to what is achieved when education and community leaders acknowledge that racism, queerphobia, transphobia, and ableism exist and work together as a community to empower students with the knowledge and skills to making better decisions.
